Edgar's Biography Name: Edgar John Bones Birthday: January 16, 1930 House: Former Hufflepuff (years 1941-1948) Year: Graduated in 1948 Kind of blood: Pureblood Pet: an owl named Hob
Physical Appearance: Edgar is of a medium height and build. In his youth, he was quite athletic and strong, but the years have had their way with him. He is not unhealthy, by any means, but he has come to realize why his son can now outrun him when they go jogging. Edgar still has a head full of curly brown hair, though he wears it shorter than he did as a boy. As a young adult, he wanted to grow a beard because he thought it would make him look more mature. Now, he is rarely clean-shaven, but that has less to do with vanity and more to do with the time it takes to get rid of the facial hair.
Biography: Edgar is the oldest child of Edward and Judith Bones. He has always gotten along with all of his relatives, but he is particularly close to his siblings, Amelia and Henry. In fact, there were times growing up when Edgar almost saw himself as a surrogate parent to his siblings. Edgar would never admit it aloud, but he thinks this is due to the fact that his parents were rarely home when he was young. Some children may have felt bitter about being left to fend for themselves, but Edgar and his siblings never saw it that way. They understood that their parents had high-profile jobs, the kind that required them to work long hours. Edgar’s mother was an Auror for twenty years. She is now semi-retired, but continues to work for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement as an advisor. Edward Bones has always worked for the Ministry of Magic, though his position has changed several times. He is currently working for the Improper Use of Magic Office.
At Hogwarts, Edgar earned a reputation as being one of the best students in his year. Many of his housemates believed that he was at the top of his class, but this was an overstatement. While Edgar worked hard during his school years, often choosing to go to the library instead of staying in the common room with his friends, he was only the top student in his Care of Magical Creatures classes. In everything else, he fell somewhere in the top fifteen.
There was a time when Edgar made it his goal in life to fight his “destiny” and find a job outside of the Ministry of Magic, but he gave up on that idea quickly. Edgar has always felt that he is meant to help people. When he was a child, he thought that meant he should become an Auror in order to help keep the world safe. He changed his mind when he began to notice how tired his mother really was though.
After finishing school, Edgar was overwhelmed by the offers that came his way. During a panic attack brought on by the idea of being unemployed, he had sent letters expressing interest in different occupations ranging from bartender to aide to the Minister of Magic. Edgar initially took a job in the Beast Division of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. He had always had a fascination with magical creatures, so the job seemed perfect for him. He stayed there for ten years before he decided it was time for a change. Edgar requested to be transferred to the Department of Magical Games and Sports. After one week in that job, he realized it was a waste of his time. Edgar could never imagine letting go of his childhood love of Quidditch, but that didn’t mean he wanted his work to be connected to the sport. Edgar heard about an opening in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement from his sister, Amelia, and quickly put in for the transfer. He spent several years working for different offices within that department before settling down as a member of the Magical Law Enforcement Squad.
While Edgar’s professional life during his twenties was a time of discovery and excitement, his personal one was practically nonexistent. Edgar never dated during his school years and only had a handful of short relationships after leaving Hogwarts. It wasn’t that he wasn’t interested in the opposite sex. He simply thought there were more important things to occupy himself with. His family always came first, but his work, whether it was for school or the Ministry, was a close second.
When Edgar was twenty-two, Gabrielle Badeau, one of Edgar’s best friends, did something very surprising. She asked him out on a date. Edgar had known Gabrielle for as long as he could remember. They had even lived in the same building when they first left school. He had never thought of her as a prospective girlfriend though, not seriously anyway. When the idea finally entered his mind, it made perfect sense. The couple dated for four years before getting married in June 1956.
In April 1959, Gabrielle gave birth to their first child, a boy named Edwin. Two years later, their daughter, Sylvia, was born. Gabrielle gave up her job as an aide in the Department of International Magical Cooperation after Edwin was born because she wanted to stay home and take care of her family. When the children were old enough to keep themselves out of trouble, she began pursuing her lifelong dream of being a painter. She is now a mildly famous artist, especially in her homeland, France.
Edgar is very content with his life at the moment. He likes his job and is able to provide for his family. His wife and children are happy and healthy. He has a nice home, warm clothes, a loyal owl. Everything is right in his world.
Likes: His wife, his children, his family, animals, Quidditch, running, having free time, leisurely Sunday mornings, writing and receiving letters
Dislikes: Disrespectful people, arrogance, “blood discrimination,” arguing with the people he cares about, being late, realizing something isn’t in its place
Extracurricular Activities: Edgar kept himself very busy during his years at Hogwarts. In addition to being a member of several academic clubs, Edgar earned a spot as a Chaser on the Hufflepuff Quidditch team during his second year and became the team captain in his fifth year. Edgar was also made a Prefect in his fifth year and became Head Boy in his seventh.
Romantic history: Edgar was twelve years old when he had his first real crush. She was two years older than him and one of his fellow Chasers. They chatted constantly during practice and always seemed to have a great time together. He was heartbroken later that year when he saw her kissing her boyfriend after their team won a match. After that unfortunate incident, Edgar decided to swear off girls and concentrate on his schoolwork. That vow lasted until the summer after Edgar’s seventh year at Hogwarts. From that point on, he dated casually, but he never had a serious girlfriend. At the time, he told himself this was because his girlfriends didn’t like the fact that he was serious about his career. Now, he wonders if his friendship with Gabrielle put a strain on his relationships.
Four years after he left Hogwarts, Edgar stumbled into a relationship with Gabrielle Badeau. Their courtship eventually resulted in a generally happy marriage. The couple will be celebrating their twentieth wedding anniversary in June 1976.
